On June 16, 2026, the 71st Sanitary-Environmental Engineering Study Day was held in Milan, entitled "Agricultural reuse of treated wastewater: prospects and opportunities". The event was coordinated by Prof. Eng. Carlo Collivignarelli and Prof. Eng. Giorgio Bertanza and promoted by the “Wastewater treatment plant management” Working Group of the University of Brescia, with the contribution of MM S.p.A. and under the patronage of GITISA.
In recent years, climate change has made the vulnerability of water systems increasingly evident. In this context, the reuse of treated wastewater is one of the most concrete and effective levers for improving the resilience of local areas, especially for agriculture, one of the largest water users and one of the sectors most exposed to the effects of the climate crisis. The regulatory framework is also evolving rapidly: on November 5, 2025, the Italian Council of Ministers gave preliminary approval to a regulation, to be adopted by Presidential Decree, on the reuse of reclaimed wastewater in implementation of EU Regulation 2020/741.
The day brought together the stakeholders directly involved in the wastewater reuse chain: it outlined the situation abroad and in Italy, comparing approaches, operational experience and results, and presented the findings of a comparison between the quality of treated effluents and that of surface water bodies, which are also used today for irrigation. The day ended with a technical visit to the refining section of the Nosedo wastewater treatment plant.
